The Spider, also born in 1974 from a study by Pininfarina, could actually be considered a "Targa", i.e. a semi-open vehicle with a removable rigid roof, a rear folding hood and a robust central roll bar with a structural function, according to the fashion of the time, also dictated by the need for greater safety and structural rigidity (the same construction technique was used by the BMW 3 Series Top Cabriolet, set up, with a similar production cycle, by Baur).
The Beta Spider was not built directly by Lancia; the normal bodies of the Beta Coupé were in fact sent to the Zagato body shop which saw to cutting, modifying and setting them up, and then returned to the Lancia factory in Chivasso where the assembly of the mechanical parts was carried out. The only trace of this pilgrimage is the Zagato letter "Z" on the bottom of the boot carpet. This car, due to the high cost, did not have the same consensus as the other sports Betas, and was removed from the list in 1982
The first models do not have the crossbar above the doors, which was later added to increase the torsional rigidity of the body. The evolution of the Spider closely followed that of the Coupé, and stopped at the third series of Coupé and HPE.
